Essential fatty acids (EFA), specifically Omega 3s, have been in the news a lot recently. They’ve also been the subject of a number of research studies. And rightly so! Omega 3 fatty acids, known commonly by two constituents EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), play a role in myriad processes in the body. One of the most important role is reversing inflammation through the action of eicosanoids.

Omega 3s fatty acids also have been shown to help manage high levels of the bad cholesterols, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides. In this way, they have a protective effect on the cardiovascular/circulatory system. They have been shown to play a role in mediating mood as a treatment of depression.

A diet rich in Omega 3 fatty acids helps health problems beyond what I have time to discuss here. Suffice it to say, they’re really good for you. In fact, Omega-3 essential fatty acids are one of the few things I suggest my patients supplement. I do encourage my patients to eat a diet rich in EFAs, but some can use additional supplementation. Omega 3 essential fatty acids are exceptionally important in regaining and maintaining health. I don’t think there’s anyone who can’t benefit from them, which is why I might encourage supplementation in addition to dietary changes.

Use this sign-up link to have a copy of the list of foods rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids emailed to you. You will also be added to my quarterly newsletter about healthy living though the seasons according to Chinese medicine philosophy.

The list comes in PDF form, and talks about why Omega 3s are so important for your health in addition to listing foods. It’s important to have a healthy amount of this essential nutrient in the food you eat, and this list tells you how to do it. In the PDF, I also discuss why you might want to get Omega 3 EFAs from animal sources, like fish oil, rather than plant sources.
