One of the conditions I’m proudest to treat with acupuncture and herbs is acne. Acne is an external condition, but it can have such damaging effects on our overall health since it can cause stress, shame and low self-confidence. I love helping people work on their health inside and out, so they can put their best face forward.

Acupuncture and herbs are such a great treatment option for acne, and I can humbly, but honestly and confidently, say that it’s better than what Western medicine offers (typically just antibiotics and retinoids for acne). I’m appalled that isotretinoin (the ingredient in Accutane) is still on the market; it’s notorious for its side effects, most notably increased risk of suicide and significant risk of birth defects. Other topical acne treatments such as retinoids can leave the skin thin and cause an increase susceptibility to the damaging effects of the sun. Acupuncture treats acne with minimal side effects, if any.

As with all the conditions I treat, every patient gets treatments that are tailored specifically for their concerns because every patient is unique. Most importantly, acupuncture treatments for acne address the specific underlying issues that are causing the breakouts. Consultations include a thorough health history, including review of diet and tips for eating an acne-reducing diet as well as traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis.

Not all acne is the same. I’m able to tell through our consultation whether its hormonal, dietary, lifestyle or a combination of all three. Naturally, a teen will have different needs than a woman coming off birth control in her thirties. For example, if you’re a woman who often experiences acne breakouts around the mouth and chin, I can treat you by regulating your menstrual cycle and hormone systems. If your acne is more pronounced across your cheeks and around the mouth with larger pustules, acupuncture and an herbal formula with dietary recommendations may be better than acupuncture alone.

Whether you are 13 or 35, no one should have to be embarrassed by unsightly acne spots on his or her face. Call for an appointment and let me help you put your best face forward.
